Bottom: Ken Peplowski and the amazing Marilyn Maye, with Bria and Joel Forbes looking on.
Now hear this! Hamilton de Holanda has released 24 of his Caprichos (in English, Caprices), soaring musical compositions that astound my mind and stir my heart. They’re free! Download them yourself here.
No, really, don’t be a fool and click/scroll to the next item. Download them NOW. And listen. You will be very glad you did.
Trio Brasiliero rocked Woods Hole’s Quicks Hole Tavern last night with choros traditional and new. The place was sold out. Unfortunately, the summer season is cranking up, so I suspect that this will be the last concert at QHT until fall.
Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks at their regular Monday & Tuesday gig at Iguana last week. What an all-star band!
Last night’s jam at The Rum House in Midtown. That’s coronet player Mike Davis with the mic and Eddy Davis on tenor banjo.
I never heard of Brian Mitchell before yesterday, but he laid down a set of monster grooves on the Hammond B3 with his bass player and drummer at The Classon last night. Brian Mitchell is one of those shouldabeen superstars who has played with Bob Dylan, Levon Helm and Allan Tousaint but never been recognized widely for his own talents. The trio — a great drummer and a rock solid bass player, whose names I did not get — really worked well together.
The Classon is a delightful space in Brooklyn with high ceilings and an open feel. It has a limited menu but what’s on it tastes great. And François, the owner, himself a musician, seems to have a good intuition about who’ll sound good in his room. This is my second visit — the first was for Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton — and both acts were truly great.
Note: the pic above is not mine. I got it from the ‘net. If it’s yours, let me know and I’ll credit you or take it down (or whatever you want) at your request.
Art Menius, one of the founders of The Folk Alliance, has penned a thoughtful essay on why he left the Board of the Folk Alliance.
"Folk Alliance International has morphed in recent years into the antithesis of much of what we wanted to create … "
Good perspective on community v business, on the difference between a (c)3 and a (c)6. Worth reading in its entirety.
One of my favorite NYC musicians, Jerron Paxton, on the cover of Eugene (OR) Weekly. Pretty good article about indy booking, house concerts, etc. entitled “Book it Yourself.”
— work in progress —
Friday, April 25:
Yvonnick Prene (French jazz on chromatic harmonica) with a vocalist, guitarist and bass, Pera Mediterranean Brasserie, 6-9:30.

Regional de NY (NYC’s own genuine Brazilian choro ensemble), Barbés, Brooklyn, 8-9:30 PM.

Sunday, April 27:

Tamar Korn Trio, Mezcal (Lower East Side), 2-5 PM. The sun streams in on this lovely listening room as one of New York’s greatest vocalists does her thing … often with excellent help e.g., Ehud Asherie on piano, Rob Adkins on bass, etc. There’s room to dance, and the margaritas are good.
Roda de Choro (a choro jam session) featuring many of the Regional de NY players, visiting Brazilian musicians, and other good players. Beco Bar in Brooklyn, 5PM (or so) til about 8ish.

Here’s video of Jimi Hendrix playing acoustic 12-string guitar. I was a little bit skeptical when I blogged [here] about this guy who used to play acoustic with Hendrix, but now I’m cured. Here’s another video clip from the same story I got the one above from.
Tamar Korn Trio today (with Ehud Asherie, piano, and Rob Adkins, bass), Cafe Mezcal.
Tamar Korn Trio (and dancers) a couple of weeks ago. Tamar has a great Sunday afternoon gig (2-5PM) every Sunday at Cafe Mezcal on Orchard Street in the Lower East Side.
Marcus Moraes & Pablo Fagundes at Quicks Hole Tavern last Thursday, April 17.
